The Bedtime Rituals of Highly Successful People

According to Business Insider, your bedtime rituals may go a long way toward determining your success. In a recent article, experts shared what the most successful people do prior to bedtime. Here are seven bedtime rituals the experts swear by:

1. Disconnect from work

Michael Kerr, an international business speaker and author of The Humor Advantage, says successful people take their minds off business in the evening hours. They don’t check their email, opting instead to focus on family and relaxation.

A buffer period helps you fall asleep untroubled by your work responsibilities. And really, if you can’t immediately fix any unresolved issues of the day, why not let them go and let your mind and body recharge?

2. Unplug completely

Don’t just unplug from work – unplug entirely. Experts agree you should avoid screen time in the evenings. Put your electronic devices outside your bedroom. The blue light from electronics is particularly disruptive to sleep; it causes your brain to stop producing melatonin, the sleep hormone.

3. Reflect

In 2016, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg made a New Year’s resolution to write down three moments of joy each night. To emulate her, try sitting quietly and going over the previous 12 hours, focusing on the things that brought you pleasure.

A Gratitude Journal is a good place to record the things in your life for which you are grateful, be they large or small. Focusing on gratitude has been shown to increase well-being. Gratitude also helps you avoid the trap of negative thinking, which leads to stress.

You may also want to think of what you have accomplished, and appreciate your own good work in the world. This type of reflection will support you in relaxing and falling into a deep, restorative sleep.
